What are the different kinds of keys a car locksmith can create?

The United States of America is a symbol of freedom around the world. Freedom can be defined by a person's ability to move around from place to place. According to Travel and Leisure, the US doesn't make the top 15 for public transportation.

This means we are very dependent on our cars. So, when you loose your car key, anxiety kicks in about how you'll get things done. Fortunately, a local locksmith can make a car key replacement to get you going again. There are several types of keys an automotive locksmith can make.

BASIC CAR KEY REPLACEMENT
Before 1997, most car keys were very simple to make and they didn't require car key programming. So the tools, training and experience a locksmith had didn't really matter. Just having the keycode, the right key blank and a key cutter would do the job.

TRANSPONDER CAR KEY REPLACEMENT
Around 1997, the automobile industry started adding another layer of security to their vehicles. The transponder chip was beginning to be widely used. These transponder chip keys require a special car key programmer that matches the key and computer electronics together. This thwarts car thefts because without the correct transponder chip the car will not start.

KEY FOBIK CAR KEY REPLACEMENT
Key FOBIK car key replacement utilizes another style of ignition as opposed to a key blade. This type of key eliminated the need for a key blade, but the FOBIK has a transponder chip, so it required car key programming. Not many manufacturers utilize this system. However, it is widely used on Chrysler products starting in 2006. The ignition was replaced with a dash mounted module. Inserting one end of the FOBIK, then turning it starts the vehicle. The FOBIK also had buttons on it that controlled many functions of the car like LOCK, UNLOCK, PANIC, TRUNK, REMOTE START and more.

PROXIMITY CAR KEY REPLACEMENT
Proximity keys are also known as Push to Start keys. This is the newest type of widely used key. These keys don't require a blade, or any mechanism to be attached to the vehicle. The key can just stay in your pocket. Once you're close by the vehicle, the car receives a radio frequency from the key and recognizes authority to access the car and start it. These keys have a transponder chip as well as a radio frequency that needs to be programmed into the vehicle computer to work.

If you need car key replacement or car key programming for any of the keys listed, a certified automotive locksmith can help.
